Wynn Russek, a junior from Delano, Minnesota, has been honored as the 2024-2025 Student Nurse of the Year by the Doug and Eileen Weigum Division of Nursing at the University of Mary's Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences. This award acknowledges Russek's dedication to nursing, leadership skills, and her passion for patient care. She will represent the university in the state SNOY competition this January.
Dr. Billie Madler, associate dean of nursing, praised Russek saying, "Wynn is an incredible choice to represent our program as this year’s University of Mary SNOY." Madler highlighted Russek's commitment to making a difference in people's lives with "grit, grace, and humility."
Russek's journey into nursing began during her junior year of high school when she realized it was her calling after a classmate suggested she would become a nurse. "At that moment, I felt a profound peace," said Russek. Her interest in pediatric oncology is driven by a desire to support families facing challenging times. Inspired by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, she aims to bring hope through her work.
As part of the University of Mary's Nursing Academy, Russek benefits from a tuition-free bachelor's degree program completed in less than three years through its Year-Round Campus initiative. The program offers rigorous academics alongside clinical experiences and holistic education.
A significant experience for Russek was a two-week European pilgrimage with her cohort where they visited Italy, Germany, and France. Reflecting on this trip she said, “In Lourdes, I found immense peace and freedom,” which reinforced her calling to serve others.
The SNOY award criteria include leadership qualities and public speaking skills along with nursing excellence. Russek acknowledged the support from peers and professors stating that success comes from being part of a community.
Amidst a national nursing shortage, Russek hopes to inspire others to pursue healthcare careers: “Nursing is one of the most fulfilling and meaningful careers anyone can pursue.” She plans to complete her studies at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck before potentially specializing in pediatric oncology internationally or working at St. Jude’s.
The University of Mary is recognized nationally for its premier nursing programs emphasizing compassionate care while respecting human dignity.
