Bismarck State College (BSC) has achieved a new milestone with its highest enrollment in the institution's 85-year history. The college recorded 4,445 students for the spring 2025 semester, surpassing its previous record of 4,392 students from fall 2011. This represents an increase of 239 students compared to the fall semester and marks six consecutive semesters of growth. Over the past two years, BSC has seen a 20% rise in full-time student numbers.
“This record-breaking enrollment reflects BSC’s commitment to student success and workforce-driven education,” said President Brent Sanford. “Our students recognize the value of an education that leads directly to careers and our partnerships with business and industry make that happen.”
The increase in enrollment is attributed to several factors including the introduction of 35 new degree programs in fields such as energy, healthcare, manufacturing and automation, cybersecurity, and agriculture. BSC currently offers seven bachelor’s degrees with two more pending approval from the Higher Learning Commission. Additionally, it provides various associate degrees, transfer degrees, and certificate programs aimed at immediate employment readiness.
“BSC’s dedication to workforce development is a key factor in our sustained growth. The focus on experiential, hands-on learning ensures graduates are prepared to enter the workforce immediately—often securing jobs before they even complete their degrees,” Sanford says.
Athletics have also contributed significantly to this growth. The college's shift from National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) competition to National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has increased interest among student-athletes. New sports offerings include men’s and women’s rodeo, track and field teams, and men’s wrestling. Women's wrestling will commence competition in fall 2025.
Further expansion is anticipated with new campus facilities enhancing academic and athletic programs. In January 2025, BSC opened its Advanced Technology Center—the region's only polytechnic facility—offering project-based learning spaces. Additionally, construction continues on the Bavendick Center athletic facility set for completion by spring 2026.
Founded as Bismarck Junior College in response to community needs in 1939 with just over a hundred students initially attending classes at Bismarck High School; today BSC stands as North Dakota's sole polytechnic institution following its mission expansion directive by ND State Board of Higher Education beginning October 1st ,2020 focusing on career-driven education aligned closely with industry demands offering clear pathways into high-demand careers from high school onward.
