Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread took part in a recent roundtable discussion focused on wildfires and their effects on the U.S. insurance market. The event was hosted by the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services.

The meeting, which was bipartisan and held behind closed doors, included participants from both the housing and insurance sectors. Godfread attended as president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), representing insurance regulators. The discussion followed recent wildfires near Los Angeles, with Godfread providing insights based on North Dakota's experiences with fires last fall.

“This discussion with federal lawmakers was an opportunity to have candid conversations about the state of property insurance in the U.S. and how we can take a collaborative approach to making strategic investments to mitigate against catastrophic events down the road,” Godfread stated.

State insurance regulators across the country are expressing solidarity with California and other regions affected by devastating wildfires. Residents in areas prone to wildfires are advised to work closely with their insurance agents to ensure they have appropriate coverage and to take steps to minimize fire risks.
