First- to third-grade teachers in North Dakota are being encouraged to apply for worm soil conservation kits offered by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and the North Dakota Ag in the Classroom Program. The initiative aims to help students learn about the role of worms in soil health and plant growth.

“I encourage educators to take advantage of this opportunity to embed agriculture into their classrooms,” Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring said. “Teachers and students will get insight into the world of worms and learn about the vital role they play in keeping soil healthy.”

The kits come with lesson plans suitable for young students, a worm farm kit, and a related book. The lesson plans are drawn from the National Ag in the Classroom Matrix and focus on soil health. Teachers have until April 1, 2026, to use the kit and lesson plans in their classrooms. A follow-up survey will be sent out in late April 2026.

The number of kits is limited, with distribution on a first-come, first-served basis. Each classroom may receive only one kit. Applications are open until November 14, 2025, and can be submitted at https://www.ndda.nd.gov/AITCresources.

For more information about the application process, educators can contact Agriculture Business Development Coordinator Heather Lang by email at hlang@nd.gov or by phone at 701-328-2308 or 701-595-9120.
