The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) has announced it is now accepting applications for the Transportation Alternatives (TA) program for the federal fiscal year 2028.

The TA program offers funding for a range of transportation-related projects. These include pedestrian and bicycle initiatives, safe routes to school and safe routes for non-drivers, and projects that convert abandoned railroad corridors for non-motorized users. Funding is also available for constructing turnouts, overlooks, and viewing areas along roadways. Community improvement activities are eligible as well, such as the preservation and rehabilitation of historic transportation facilities, vegetation management in transportation rights of way, archaeological activities related to transportation projects, streetscape improvements, and corridor landscaping. Additionally, environmental mitigation projects may qualify.

Eligible applicants for the program include city and county governments, transit agencies, natural resource or public land agencies, school districts, local education agencies, tribal governments, and other local or regional governmental entities that are responsible for transportation or recreational trails.

The amount of funding a project receives will be based on the cost estimate provided in the project application. Only the contract construction cost is eligible for funding. Items not covered by the program include preliminary and construction engineering, environmental impact mitigation, right-of-way acquisition, utilities, and any construction items deemed ineligible for federal aid.

Applications must be submitted to NDDOT by December 31, 2025.
