Kelly Armstrong, Governor | North Dakota Governor's Office
Gov. Kelly Armstrong has extended his congratulations to Kirsten Baesler, the North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction, on her nomination for a position within the U.S. Department of Education. Baesler is set to become the Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education.
Baesler has held her current role since January 2013 and was re-elected in November 2024. She intends to continue as state superintendent until her confirmation at the federal level.
Her career spans 12 years as state superintendent and includes 24 years with Bismarck Public Schools in various capacities such as classroom teacher, instructional aide, library media specialist, and vice principal. Additionally, she served nine years on the Mandan School Board.
“Superintendent Baesler has the background and experience needed to bring North Dakota common sense to the U.S. Department of Education,” Armstrong stated. “She understands that decisions affecting local schools are best left to local school districts, with guidance from the state and limited involvement from the federal government. We wish her all the best in D.C. and look forward to working with her to support 21st century learning environments that engage students, expand educational opportunities and empower parents.”
According to state law, once Baesler is confirmed and resigns from her current position, Gov. Armstrong will appoint a replacement who will serve until a new election in November 2026.
