Horizon Middle School has announced that its robotics team, the HMS Gearbots, has been named state champions and will represent North Dakota at the First Lego League World Championship. The announcement was made via a Facebook post on February 9, 2025.

According to the announcement by the school, the HMS Gearbots' success is attributed to their dedication, teamwork, and hard work. They will compete in Houston, Texas, in April 2025.

The 2025 First Championship is scheduled to take place in Houston from April 16-19. It serves as an event celebrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and youth robotics. The event allows qualified participants to compete while showcasing advancements in these fields. Sponsorship opportunities are available, with support from BAE Systems and other partners. The competition is part of the 2024-2025 FIRST season, which includes multiple robotics challenges leading up to the championship.

Meetings for the Husky Gearbots began in November, with sign-ups announced through morning announcements and posted on school monitors. Horizon Middle School also offers various student organizations such as the 6th grade musical, art club, chess club, circle group, debate club, drama/musical productions, FFA (Future Farmers of America), husky wellness/peer-to-peer leadership programs, husky singers, jazz band, journalism for the yearbook, science olympiads, sources of strength program, student council activities, and tobacco prevention club.

Horizon Middle School opened in 2001 and currently serves 1,064 students. The school provides a challenging curriculum focused on active learning and adheres to educational best practices with an emphasis on professional development. It aims to create a safe and inclusive environment supported by various services for students. Its mission is "Empower every learner to thrive," emphasizing collaboration, innovation, and relationships. Horizon values inclusion, excellence, innovation, leadership and encourages students to be hardworking and self-sufficient.
