With the onset of cold winter temperatures, there is a risk that frost may reach water utility lines. While most water mains and service lines in the city are buried deeply enough to avoid freezing, some individual service lines may not be adequately protected.

Residents are advised to check their pipes by running faucets on cold for five to ten minutes and measuring the temperature with a thermometer. If the water temperature is below 38 degrees, the Utility Department suggests keeping the water running at a small, steady trickle until the ground warms up.

The cost of thawing frozen pipes can exceed that of letting a small amount of water run continuously. For further inquiries or concerns, residents can contact the Utility Department at 701-667-3240.
