Bismarck Mayor Mike Schmitz is urging local third and seventh graders to participate in the annual 'If I Were Mayor' essay contest. This initiative, organized by the North Dakota League of Cities (NDLC), invites young students each spring to reflect on public service and community leadership. The competition evaluates entries from each grade separately.

"A sense of civic leadership is critical to ensuring a strong future for our community," stated Schmitz. "I believe this essay contest is a powerful way for Bismarck’s youth to analyze their own community, see what they like, and find ways to make their hometown better. I encourage every third and seventh grader to evaluate their hometown and look for ways we can make Bismarck better, together."

Participants must submit their essays by March 14, 2025, either via email or postmarked mail. Winners will be announced during City Government Week in April. Successful entrants will receive a $150 cash prize and have their essays published in CITYScan, NDLC's monthly magazine.

Further details on contest rules and submission procedures are available on the North Dakota League of City's website or by contacting Jennifer at 701-223-3518.
