The city of Bismarck has introduced a pilot program for bulk residential item collection, set to run through the first half of 2025. Residents can prepay to schedule curbside pickups for items that do not fit in their standard 96-gallon garbage cans.

According to an alert by the city of Bismarck, the program charges a $20 service fee for collecting up to five items, plus landfill disposal costs for each item. Freon-containing items, such as air conditioners and refrigerators, will incur an additional $20 disposal fee. Non-Freon items like box springs and televisions will have a $10 disposal fee per item.

Items must be placed on the curb by 6 AM on the scheduled pickup day. The city warns that pickup days may be affected by winter weather and that no bulk item collection will occur in April 2025 due to Spring Cleanup Week. Unacceptable items include household renovation debris and tires.

The city's Public Works Department is responsible for managing this program. The department includes service operations, led by Director Steve Salwei, which handles services related to city building maintenance and solid waste management. Utility operations are managed by Director Michelle Klose and cover areas such as water treatment and stormwater management.

Solid waste services encompass garbage collection, recycling, landfill management, and yard waste collection. The division also oversees special programs like household hazardous waste disposal and operates a Re-Use Room for items in good condition. Additionally, yard waste collection sites are available for residents along with a designated holiday schedule for waste management services.
