Traffic on Interstate 94 at Exit 161 in Bismarck will shift to a new bridge beginning the morning of Wednesday, September 3. The change is part of the ongoing I-94 Exit 161 Interchange project. Once traffic moves to the new structure, the old bridge will close completely so crews can start work on the east side of the interchange.
Overnight on Tuesday, September 2, workers will set up traffic control equipment for a temporary pattern. For westbound I-94, all drivers using Centennial Road or Bismarck Expressway will access I-94 West via a new northwest on-ramp and exit using a temporary off-ramp. Eastbound drivers will use a new southwest off-ramp to leave I-94 East and enter using the existing southeast on-ramp.
Centennial Road and Bismarck Expressway traffic across the new bridge will be limited to one lane in each direction during this phase. Pedestrians are directed to use sidewalks on the new bridge, with temporary barriers near Miriam Avenue guiding them from current walkways.
Barricades will block access to the old bridge ahead of its planned demolition later in September. Drivers should expect further changes in traffic patterns as construction continues and are urged to follow posted signs and remain cautious around construction zones.
The I-94 Exit 161 Interchange project started in spring 2024 and is scheduled for completion by summer 2026. According to officials, "The project is designed to improve traffic flow by eliminating two left-turn movements and adding right-turn loops for more efficient travel." The North Dakota Department of Transportation stated, "NDDOT appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as this essential infrastructure project moves forward."
