The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) will start its fall mowing operations along state highways in early to mid-September. The agency states that this seasonal activity is intended to prepare for winter and reduce the amount of snow drifting onto roadways.
"Fall mowing is preparation for the upcoming winter season to help minimize drifting of snow onto the roadway," according to NDDOT.
Landowners who wish to mow non-interstate ditches for hay are advised to complete their work before state crews begin mowing. Private mowing is not permitted in medians on four-lane highways.
State law requires that hay bales be stored on the outer edge of highway rights of way, and large round bales must not be placed on inslopes or within 60 feet of the roadway. All hay stored on these rights of way must be removed by November 1, as mandated by North Dakota regulations.
For additional information, residents can contact their local NDDOT district office.
