The North Dakota Industrial Commission has approved $700,000 in matching grants for renewable energy projects as part of its latest funding round. The commission, which includes Gov. Kelly Armstrong, Attorney General Drew Wrigley and Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring, announced the awards on Wednesday.
The Renewable Energy Program was established in 2007 to encourage research and use of renewable energy resources in North Dakota. It is funded entirely by revenue from oil and gas production taxes.
Of the total grant money awarded, $200,000 will go to the University of North Dakota for a project focused on producing silicon anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Another $500,000 will be provided to BWR Innovations, LLC for work on improving renewable energy resources through hydrogen offtake.
“The Renewable Energy Program was established in 2007 to promote research and utilization of North Dakota’s renewable energy resources, including advanced biofuels. The grant program is funded solely by oil and gas production tax revenue,” the commission stated.
