Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak (R-ND) addressed the House of Representatives to express her support for H.R. 1, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill. The bill passed in the House earlier today. During her speech, Fedorchak emphasized the tax relief benefits that North Dakotans, particularly farmers like the Baldwin family from St. Thomas, ND, would receive.
Fedorchak highlighted the importance of this bill for working-class families who rely on tax deductions such as the 199A deduction. "They are not millionaires or billionaires," she stated. "They’re family farmers." She noted that Brent and Stephanie Baldwin, along with their three children, are fourth-generation farmers who cultivate wheat, sugar beets, edible beans, and soybeans.
The congresswoman stressed that without legislative action, crucial tax relief measures would expire at year's end. The proposed bill aims to make permanent expansions and increases to deductions for pass-through businesses similar to those operated by the Baldwins.
In 2020 alone, 67,000 taxpayers in North Dakota claimed the 199A deduction which resulted in $682 million returning to residents' pockets. Fedorchak described this as "real money for working class Americans."
Additionally, she mentioned that the bill seeks to eliminate what is commonly referred to as the death tax for family-owned businesses. "We can’t have the big bloated federal government stealing their hard work and wasting it on fraud and abuse," she argued.
Fedorchak concluded by underscoring the urgency of these measures for rural America's backbone—family farmers and producers—and urged Congress to make these tax cuts permanent by passing the bill.
"Thank you," she said before yielding back her time on the floor.
