Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak recently visited Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, a key component of the United States' nuclear defense strategy. The base houses two of the three legs of America's nuclear triad. During her visit, Fedorchak toured the base's critical infrastructure and met with airmen and security personnel.
"This visit was a chance to hear directly from those serving at one of the most strategically important bases in the country. Their motto, 'Only the Best Come North,' accurately reflects what we have here in Minot," Fedorchak stated. She expressed gratitude to Cols. Lamarand and Schlabach for their hospitality and insights into the challenges faced by the base.
Fedorchak received briefings from Col. Jesse Lamarand, Commander of the 5th Bomb Wing, and Col. James Schlabach, Commander of the 91st Missile Wing. The 5th Bomb Wing operates B-52 Stratofortress bombers as part of America's long-range strike capabilities. The 91st Missile Wing manages over 150 Minuteman III ICBMs across an extensive missile complex.
Discussions during her visit included infrastructure modernization efforts like the Sentinel program aimed at extending ICBM viability into the future. These upgrades are crucial for maintaining a credible deterrent amid global security challenges.
During her tour, Fedorchak observed infrastructure issues such as aging facilities and barriers needing updates to support new missile systems. She also discussed eliminating bureaucratic hurdles that delay healthcare access for airmen managing nuclear stockpiles.
The congresswoman had an opportunity to see a B-52 Bomber up close, noting its significant role in strategic bombing missions with its ability to deliver long-range precision strikes using Air-Launched Cruise Missiles.
Fedorchak concluded her visit with a tour of a Minuteman III ICBM silo led by Security Forces Group personnel, gaining insight into security protocols ensuring rapid response capabilities against threats.
Additionally, she learned about "Operation Home for the Holidays," which assists airmen with travel expenses during holiday seasons.
