During National Consumer Protection Week, running from February 28 to March 6, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) made efforts to inform the public about a new tool aimed at shielding veterans and claimants from potentially predatory companies. The VA has recommended that veterans and their families who are in the process of filing benefit claims make use of the department’s Accreditation Search Index.
This index contains contact details specific to each state and offers a downloadable list of Veterans Service Organization (VSO) representatives, attorneys, and claims agents who can lawfully and ethically assist with VA claims. "VA cautions Veterans and claimants of online offers to assist in the preparation of their benefit claims that sound too good to be true," stated Acting Under Secretary for Benefits Thomas Murphy. "To help guard against fraud and scams, VA urges all Veterans and claimants to first consult VA's Accreditation Search Index to protect themselves from predatory practices.”
The department emphasized that any business or individual who seeks to assist with VA benefit claims without official recognition from the VA is acting contrary to the law. Accredited representatives are rigorously checked to ensure they possess good character and a reputation for capable, competent representation. When helping veterans, they must follow VA’s standards of professional conduct that prohibit the charging of unlawful or unreasonable fees. Violators risk suspension or cancellation of their VA accreditation.
For those seeking more information regarding VA-accredited representatives and their responsibilities, the VA recommends visiting the Accreditation & Discipline - Office of General Counsel. This resource provides information on VA-recognized VSOs, accredited VSO representatives, attorneys, claims agents, pertinent fees, and guidance on appointing or changing representation.
