North Dakota State University Extension is organizing a calving school on March 20, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the North Central Research Extension Center in Minot, North Dakota.
The event will cover essential topics such as preparing for calving by assembling supply kits, recognizing calving stages, and understanding normal delivery expectations. Participants will also learn about managing abnormal births, optimizing nutrition during late gestation and early lactation, caring for newborn calves, and maintaining effective record-keeping practices.
A new feature this year includes a cow and calf model that allows attendees to practice assisting with abnormal deliveries. This hands-on experience aims to help participants navigate various calving complication scenarios.
Leading the program are NDSU Extension livestock management specialist Lacey Quail, Kelly Schaefer of Schaefer Veterinary Service, and NDSU Extension agents Paige Brummund from Ward County and Kathryn Slavick from McHenry County.
“Whether you are well seasoned or new to calving cows, this workshop will provide you with tips, tools and hands-on activities to be better prepared for the upcoming calving season,” says Brummund.
Attendance is free of charge. Lunch will be provided; however, registration is requested for meal count and materials. Interested individuals can register by visiting ndsu.ag/calvingschool25 or calling 701-857-6444.
The North Central Research Extension Center is located at 5400 Highway 83 S in Minot.
