The North Dakota Industrial Commission has announced the opening of grant round 106 for the Lignite Research, Development and Marketing Program. Interested parties must submit their applications by February 14, 2025. Applications can be sent via email to ndicgrants@nd.gov.
The Lignite Research Council, which plays a role in assisting the Industrial Commission with the program's administration, is scheduled to meet in March. The specific date and location for this meeting are yet to be determined.
This program represents a significant public/private partnership aimed at funding research and development projects that focus on preserving and enhancing North Dakota’s lignite resources. The program is financed through coal severance tax, coal conversion tax, and oil and gas tax revenues, with an annual budget of approximately $7.5 million. Since its inception in 1987, more than $139 million has been invested by the state into lignite research funds. To date, over 250 projects have received funding under this initiative, with a combined project value exceeding $2.5 billion.
Eligibility for applying extends to any individual or entity such as corporations, partnerships, cooperatives, associations, or consortia of these parties. It is required that the funds awarded be matched by private contributions. Further details about the program can be accessed on the Industrial Commission’s website at https://www.nd.gov/ndic/.
