The city of Bismarck announced that road construction on 19th Street, from Calgary Avenue to Oregon Drive, will begin on Monday, Aug. 12, 2024. The project includes reconstructing the road and adding a mini roundabout at the 19th Street and Calgary Avenue intersection.

According to an alert by the city of Bismarck, road construction on 19th Street is scheduled to last one month and will include a detour rerouting northbound traffic via Century Avenue, State Street, and 43rd Avenue North, with southbound traffic using the reverse route. Additionally, starting Aug. 12, 2024, construction will also begin on 14th Street between Harvest Lane and just south of Calgary Avenue. Traffic will be shifted to one side of the road during the month-long project.

The Engineering Department manages the design and construction of asphalt and concrete streets within city right-of-way but does not cover private streets in mobile home parks or certain developments. These are maintained by their respective owners or associations. The department conducts visual assessments of all city streets, recording the data in a computerized database to identify those needing maintenance. Each year, a citywide street repair project is contracted to address the most critical areas, aiming to prolong the street’s lifespan and avoid major reconstruction.

The Engineering Department also manages the construction and modification of sidewalks, driveway aprons, and curb ramps. It coordinates with other local agencies on multi-use trail projects. Residents are responsible for clearing snow and ice from their sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall; otherwise, the city may clear it and charge the property owner. The department identifies areas lacking sidewalks and allows residents to suggest new locations through an interactive tool. For driveway work, property owners can either hire a city-approved contractor directly or request the city to manage the project.
