The University of Mary will hold its annual Veterans Day Chapel Service and luncheon to recognize military service members from North Dakota. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 11, at 11 a.m. in Founders Hall at the Lumen Vitae University Center on campus. The ceremony is open to both the public and media.
This year’s keynote speaker is Sergeant First Class Pete Dobitz, a retired veteran of the North Dakota National Guard. Dobitz was born in Dickinson and grew up in New England, North Dakota. He served over two decades before retiring in 2008, working as a combat engineer, medical specialist, heavy equipment operator, and road clearance operator during his career.
Dobitz deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom from December 2003 to April 2005. He also participated in border security operations in Arizona and took part in humanitarian efforts in the Dominican Republic after a hurricane, helping rebuild schools and hospitals. His military awards include the Bronze Star Medal for valor, Army Commendation Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Humanitarian Service Medal.
“Service takes many forms,” Dobitz said. “Whether it’s in the military, the classroom, or your community, it’s about giving of yourself for something greater. That’s what makes Veterans Day so meaningful. The relationships and camaraderie we share as soldiers are what stay with you long after the missions are over. I’m grateful for the opportunity to honor the men and women who continue to serve with courage and humility.”
Currently, Dobitz teaches chemistry and anatomy at Dickinson High School and serves as head baseball coach—a position he has held for 25 years—leading teams to multiple state championships across his 32-year teaching career.
After the chapel service concludes, attendees will be guided along a brief parade route to Crow’s Nest Campus Restaurant for a complimentary lunch sponsored by Steve and Eileen Scheel.
