Myron Schulz Director of Athletics at Bismarck State College | Bismarck State College
Bismarck State College Director of Athletics Myron Schulz has announced his retirement, set for January 2, 2026. Schulz shared the news with the college on Wednesday morning, marking the end of a career spanning nearly four decades in athletics and education.
“It’s been such an honor to be able to spend these past four years with BSC,” said Schulz. “I have such a great love for my alma mater, and I wanted to execute their vision of moving to the NAIA, constructing a new facility to upgrade our student experience, and to add new sports and opportunities for our student-athletes. I’m proud of the work we’ve done and excited to see BSC athletics continue to grow.”
Schulz began his tenure as director of athletics at BSC on August 24, 2021. During his time at the college, he oversaw significant changes including BSC's transition from two-year to four-year athletics by moving from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In June 2024, BSC started construction on the Bavendick Center, a $40 million facility scheduled to open in spring 2026 as the new home for Mystic athletics. The number of sports offered at BSC also grew under his leadership—from seven in 2021 to nineteen—adding programs such as competitive dance, drone racing, rodeo, men’s and women’s wrestling, indoor and outdoor track and field, and cross country.
“Myron has led BSC Athletics with both heart and vision,” said Interim President Dan Leingang. “His leadership has helped set the stage for a promising future for BSC athletics. We are grateful for his dedication to our college, our athletic programs, and most importantly, to our student-athletes whose lives he has impacted.”
Before joining BSC, Schulz worked at the University of Mary after earning his Bachelor of Applied Science there in 1987. He coached football during UMary's first varsity season before teaching and coaching in New Rockford, North Dakota. After obtaining a master’s degree from Montana State University while working as a graduate assistant coach for its football program, Schulz returned to UMary as defensive coordinator in 1992. He became head coach in 1999—a position he held for fifteen years—compiling a record of 103-60 that made him UMary's winningest coach. Several staff members from his tenure went on to prominent coaching roles elsewhere.
After coaching at UMary ended, Schulz led its sport and leisure management program until returning to Bismarck State College.
Schulz is originally from Bismarck; he attended Century High School before enrolling at then-Bismarck Junior College where he played football and baseball for the Mystics.
He is only the fourth person ever appointed director of athletics at BSC since it established that role more than sixty years ago.
The college will now begin searching for its next director of athletics. Those interested can apply through bismarckstate.edu/Employment.
