Gov. Kelly Armstrong has ordered all government agencies in North Dakota to lower the United States and state flags to half-staff on Thursday. The move is intended to honor those who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Armstrong also encourages residents of North Dakota to lower flags at their homes and businesses.
“As Americans, our lives were changed forever when evil struck our nation 24 years ago. We continue to observe 9/11 in honor of the innocent victims, the heroes who gave their lives and those who continue to be affected by the tragic events of that fateful day," Armstrong said. "We will never forget, and we will always be grateful for the sacrifices of those who protect our liberty and work toward a more peaceful world with freedom for all.”
The governor’s directive aligns with a joint resolution passed by Congress that designates September 11 as Patriot Day each year. Federal law also requests Americans mark September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. People across the country are asked to observe a moment of silence at 7:46 a.m. Central Daylight Time to pay tribute to those killed in the attacks.
