North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong has ordered that all U.S. and North Dakota flags be flown at half-staff through August 31. The directive is in response to a shooting that took place at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis.

Armstrong encouraged residents and businesses across the state to also lower their flags as a sign of respect for the victims.

“Kjersti and I are heartbroken for our neighbors in Minnesota and praying for the victims of the unspeakable act of violence at Annunciation Catholic School and their families,” Armstrong said. “We are grateful for the first responders and medical professionals caring for the victims.”

The governor's order follows a proclamation issued by President Donald Trump.
