The Cass County Commission has introduced a new practice at its monthly meetings, inviting community members to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The initiative aims to recognize individuals who have contributed significantly through public service, leadership, or involvement in the community.

At the most recent meeting, Major General (Ret.) Keith Bjerke was the first guest chosen for this honor. General Bjerke is a North Dakota State University graduate and served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1961 to 1964. His career includes serving as Adjutant General of the North Dakota National Guard, where he attained the rank of Major General in 1996. He also led the national Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service between 1989 and 1993.

Beyond his military and government roles, Bjerke has been active on several boards such as the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Grain Exchange. He was President of World Perspective Services and worked at NDSU as Vice President for University Relations from 2001 to 2011, overseeing legislative affairs and outreach efforts. In recognition of his service, he was inducted into the Military Hall of Valor in 2011.

“The Commission feels this is a way to honor our great county and people in our community who help make Cass County an exceptional place to live, work and raise a family,” said Commission Vice-chair Tim Flakoll. “Keith Bjerke is a patriotic man who has been a great role model with a strong moral compass. He has given a lifetime of service to our community, state and country and we were excited to have him lead the pledge to begin this tradition.”

The public is encouraged by the Cass County Commission to suggest other individuals who could be invited to lead future Pledge of Allegiance ceremonies at commission meetings. Suggestions can be submitted via email at pio@casscountynd.gov.
