The North Dakota Industrial Commission has approved $2.6 million in matching grants to support electric grid resilience projects. The funding is part of the latest round under Section 40101(d) of the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). The commission, made up of Governor Kelly Armstrong, Attorney General Drew Wrigley, and Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring, oversees the distribution of these funds.

The program aims to strengthen the electric grid against disruptions from extreme weather, wildfires, or natural disasters. Funding for this initiative consists of 85% federal money and 15% state contributions.

Two main projects received approval in this round. McLean Electric Cooperative will receive $515,900 to upgrade oil circuit reclosers to dielectric reclosers. Montana Dakota Utilities was awarded $2,086,456 for its Merricourt Sub-Transmission Upgrade project.

“We commend the project sponsors for their investments in energy resiliency,” the Commission said in a joint statement. “The projects approved today demonstrate North Dakota’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of energy transmission security, reliability and innovation.”
