The Bismarck Human Relations Committee is set to honor three recipients for their contributions to advancing human rights. The awards will be presented at the Bismarck City Commission meeting on July 22 at 5:15 p.m.
The youth individual award will go to Lauren Zent, nominated by Rob Peske. Zent has worked extensively with individuals with special needs, volunteering with United Sound and providing respite care through Pride Inc. She organizes community outings and maintains relationships with clients beyond her work hours. Peske noted her leadership and commitment to inclusion, adding that many she supported attended her graduation party.
Zent plans to pursue a degree in special education. “I truly enjoy what I do and the people I work with, so I'm honored to receive this award," she said.
Mika Stokkeland will receive the adult individual award, nominated by Kerry Beck. Stokkeland is a military human resources specialist who volunteers with Designer Genes, supporting individuals with Down syndrome. She organizes private events for families and supports advocacy efforts like the Walk for Down Syndrome.
“I accept this award... because it shines a light on my beautiful Down syndrome community,” said Stokkeland.
Youthworks will be awarded as a business or nonprofit organization. Nominated by Emily Yanish and Erin Oban, Youthworks provides safe spaces for young people under the Positive Youth Development philosophy. They advocate for youth needs through community involvement.
“We’re honored to be recognized... for our work with local youth,” said Mark Heinert, executive director of Youthworks.
