A selection process is underway for the next chief of the Bismarck Police Department, which has been in operation for 151 years. Daniel Weigel and Jason Stugelmeyer have been chosen as finalists to replace Dave Draovitch, who will retire at the end of the month.
Bismarck City Administrator Jason Tomanek commented on the transition: “It’s always difficult when you start talking about the end of someone’s career, but for a strong municipal organization to remain dynamic, we need that next generation of good leaders to step up and begin leading the department on a continued path toward success.” He noted that there was a strong candidate pool and expressed anticipation for the interview process.
Weigel is currently a patrol commander with the University of North Dakota Police Department in Grand Forks. His roles since joining in 2012 include investigations commander, administrative commander, public information officer, patrol sergeant, investigative sergeant, and officer. He previously worked as a deputy with the Walsh County Sheriff’s Office. Weigel graduated from UND in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and has served on the Grand Forks City Council since 2016.
Stugelmeyer serves as deputy chief with Bismarck Police Department. Over his 24-year tenure there, he has held positions such as officer, detective, patrol sergeant, and lieutenant. His service includes 15 years with West Dakota SWAT Team. He has received multiple awards including three Badge of Hope honors and two Meritorious Service Awards. Stugelmeyer earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from University of Minnesota-Moorhead in 2000.
Draovitch announced his retirement plans earlier this year after starting his law enforcement career in 1989. Out of seven applicants meeting qualifications for his position, four advanced to further testing before one withdrew voluntarily.
The interview panel consists of five members: Bismarck Mayor Michael Schmitz, City Commissioner John Risch, City Administrator Jason Tomanek, Human Resources Director Leanne Schmidt, and Fire Chief Joel Boespflug.
A recommendation from this panel will be presented during Bismarck City Commission's meeting on July 22 at Tom Baker Room located at City/County Building (221 N Fifth Street). The meeting starts at 5:15 PM with agendas typically available online by Wednesday prior.
