Attorney General finds New Town in violation of open meetings law

The City of New Town has been found in violation of open meetings law, according to a new opinion issued by the Attorney General's Office. The opinion, numbered 2025-L-02 and dated July 9, 2025, addresses an incident involving the City Council.

The issue arose when city employees attending a council meeting in their personal capacity were asked to leave the room during discussions about employee salaries. This action was deemed a violation of North Dakota Century Code § 44-04-19.

The conclusion from the Attorney General’s Opinion states: "The City Council violated open meetings law when it asked employees to leave the room during a meeting when employee salaries were discussed."
