The North Dakota Department of Commerce has announced the opening of applications for the Rural Grocery Store Sustainability Grant. Starting on July 9 at 3 p.m. CDT, eligible entities can apply for this grant aimed at improving food access and ensuring the sustainability of grocery services in rural areas.
The grant program offers up to $150,000 per applicant, requiring a 20% non-state match that may include in-kind support. The initiative is designed to bolster local food systems, enhance economic resilience, and promote community development.
Maria Effertz, Commerce Community Services Director, stated: “This grant supports grocery stores, but it’s more including food security, local partnerships and investing in the sustainability of our rural communities.”
Eligible applicants include political subdivisions, tribal entities, and regional councils serving communities with populations of 4,500 or fewer. Priority will be given to proposals showing regional cooperation among various local stakeholders such as food providers and schools.
Projects funded by this grant must be completed within 18 months from the award date. Applications are due by September 3 at 5 p.m. CDT with awards being announced on September 17. Interested parties should submit their applications through the online portal provided on ndgov.link/rural-grocery.
