In a significant milestone, the Fort Yates Public School District is celebrating Mr. Larry Silbernagel's 50 years of service as a school bus driver. His long-standing commitment has made him a familiar and comforting presence for generations of students and staff.

"Larry was driving when I was a student at FYPS back in the late eighties," said Kim Whitebull, the current superintendent. "I bet he can remember almost all the names and faces of the kids and their parents. Larry treats each child with kindness and respect."

Mr. Silbernagel has been an integral part of the district, logging thousands of miles over his career while ensuring students' safety to and from school. Despite reaching this milestone, when asked about retirement by Ms. Whitebull last year, he expressed his intention to reach 50 years, which he achieved on May 15, 2025.

To honor his dedication, the district hosted a steak dinner celebration attended by staff and his son Casey. He received a star quilt, a high honor among the D/Lakota people. Board member Virgil Tiokasin shared memories of Larry’s family and some Fort Yates history during the event.

The school board will also present Mr. Silbernagel with a plaque recognizing his service. As he begins his 51st year in the 2025-2026 school year, Mr. Silbernagel continues to be seen as dependable and an icon filled with the school's history.
