Leadership at the University of North Dakota (UND) and the Space Development Agency (SDA) have signed an Educational Partnership Agreement, highlighting the importance of Grand Forks in space development and national security. This partnership was announced during a visit to Grand Forks by SDA Director Dr. Derek Tournear, accompanied by U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer.

Senator Cramer, Chair of the Senate Armed Services Airland Subcommittee, has supported this collaboration to create educational and workforce development opportunities at UND. He stated, “This collaboration between the University of North Dakota and the Space Development Agency is a testament to the transformational capabilities Grand Forks has to offer,” adding that it will benefit both the university and global security.

Dr. Tournear expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “The Space Development Agency looks forward to a deeper partnership with the University of North Dakota through the newly-signed Educational Partnership Agreement.” He emphasized that this agreement will foster idea exchange and personnel interaction between SDA and UND.

The agreement includes provisions for enhancing science, mathematics, and engineering courses at UND through educational opportunities provided by SDA. It allows for lending defense laboratory equipment to UND and permits SDA personnel to assist in course development.

Additionally, it offers sabbatical opportunities for faculty, internships for students, participation in SDA projects with academic credit options, as well as academic and career guidance from SDA staff.

In April, Dr. Tournear visited UND along with General Michael Guetlein from U.S. Space Force and Senator Cramer. They toured key facilities including John D. Odegard School Of Aerospace Sciences and National Security Corridor at College of Engineering & Mines.
