North Dakota Health and Human Services has updated qualifying income levels for public health programs targeting children and families, aligning with the annual federal poverty level guidelines reflecting cost-of-living changes.

Effective from May 1, 2025, income eligibility for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and the Special Health Services Financial Coverage Program has increased. A family of four can now earn up to $59,478 annually, marking an increase of $1,758. The income thresholds vary depending on the household size, and each program includes further stipulations.

The WIC program, funded federally, provides healthy nutrition items, education, and community referrals for eligible pregnant women and families with children under five. Offerings include fresh produce, dairy products, grains, cereals, and various other staples, as well as breastfeeding support and iron-fortified formula.

Participants in Medicaid, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) qualify for WIC benefits. Additional program details and application instructions can be found at hhs.nd.gov/food-programs/WIC.

The Special Health Services Financial Coverage Program assists families of children up to 21 years old who need specialized medical services for chronic health conditions. Coverage includes dental services, medications, therapy, and various other medical supports.

Around 20% of North Dakota children have special healthcare needs. The Special Health Services program aims to mitigate gaps in insurance coverage, addressing over 100 eligible medical conditions and helping families access quality care. Eligibility details are available at hhs.nd.gov/health/children/special-health-services/financial-coverage-program or by contacting 800-755-2714.

On April 1, North Dakota Medicaid also updated eligibility limits for its coverage groups, with information accessible at hhs.nd.gov/healthcare/medicaid/eligibility.

The federal poverty level serves as a baseline for U.S. government assistance programs, ensuring support reaches those in financial need.

North Dakota Health and Human Services states, "HHS is an equal opportunity provider."
