Bismarck State College is hosting an event focused on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People (MMIWP). The summit is scheduled for Monday, May 5, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Advanced Technology Center Live Event Venue, located at 1220 Schafer St., on the Bismarck State College campus. This free event is open to the public and aims to move the dialogue from awareness to advocacy and justice.

Connie Walker, an investigative journalist who has been recognized with a Pulitzer Prize and a Peabody Award, will deliver the keynote address. Walkerr was also named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in 2024. Through her extensive work, she has brought attention to the stories and systemic issues facing Indigenous communities. Prairie Rose Seminole will serve as the event's emcee. She is known for her work as a filmmaker, educator, and advocate for Native visibility and policy change.

The program includes a variety of activities: a ceremonial opening, panels featuring law enforcement and legislators, and a discussion with family members and advocates involved in MMIWP issues. Notable panelists include Brad Hawk, McLean County Sheriff JR Kerzmann, North Dakota Representative Jayme Davis, and former U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp. Families affected by the MMIWP crisis and those involved in recovery and justice efforts will also share their experiences.

Special appearances will be made by the Lake Region Singers and the United Tribes Technical College Color Guard. This summit forms part of the "Embracing BSC and the Bringing Humanities to Life" initiatives, with the aim of amplifying voices, fostering healing, and inspiring action.

Additional information about the event is available at bismarckstate.edu/events, and updates can be followed on Bismarck State College's social media platforms.
