The mayors of Bismarck and Mandan, alongside the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC, unveiled "Bismarck-Mandan: Where Home is More than Hello," a community initiative designed to enhance the welcoming of newcomers. The effort aims to engage residents in making Bismarck-Mandan more hospitable, thereby encouraging newcomers to establish permanent residence.
New arrivals contribute significantly to the local economy by increasing business revenue, filling jobs, and enhancing community services. The initiative seeks to mitigate feelings of isolation, which, according to a 2024 Pew Research Study, affect one in six Americans.
Brenda Nagel, Director of Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC, emphasized the importance of this effort, stating, “New people are coming to Bismarck-Mandan as students at the University of Mary and Bismarck State College, retired people from rural North Dakota, temporary employees in our healthcare organizations, local businesses for workforce, and legal immigrants. It is logical that we make the effort to welcome them well so they want to stay here.”
The region sees an annual population growth of about 1,000 people, with two-thirds of University of Mary students coming from out-of-state. Mandan Mayor Jim Froelich noted, “a strong community is built on kindness, connection and a shared commitment to making everyone feel at home. Whether you lived here for generations or just arrived, you are a valued part of our community.”
Bismarck Mayor Mike Schmitz highlighted ongoing efforts, stating, “We have pockets of wonderful things happening in our communities. Some people open their homes and hearts to new people coming into their workplaces and neighborhoods already. We want this effort to reach those who may not have considered how it feels to be new in our community and to take a step beyond just saying ‘hello’ and truly welcoming them.”
The Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC sponsors the Make Your Mark Bismarck-Mandan website, offering a platform for community clubs and organizations to register for no charge, allowing both residents and newcomers to engage with local groups. Registration is available at MakeYourMarkBisMan.com. Additionally, people can join the Facebook group "Bismarck Mandan Make Your Mark."
Local businesses can participate by displaying a Bismarck-Mandan welcome slick in their windows, obtainable from city offices or the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC. Volunteer presentations about the initiative are available upon request.
