The mayors of Bismarck and Mandan, in collaboration with the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC, have launched an initiative titled "Bismarck-Mandan: Where Home is More than Hello." The program, unveiled at a recent press conference, aims to engage residents to foster a more welcoming environment for newcomers.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, the effort targets newcomers' integration into the community, potentially encouraging them to establish a permanent residence in Bismarck-Mandan. An influx of new residents means increased economic activity, enhanced business opportunities, job fulfillment, a stronger healthcare and educational system, more volunteers, an expanded tax base, new leadership, and a vibrant community infused with new skills and perspectives. The initiative also addresses social issues, particularly loneliness, as data from a 2024 Pew Research Study indicates.

Brenda Nagel, Director of the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC, remarked, "New people are coming to Bismarck-Mandan as students at the University of Mary and Bismarck State College, retired people from rural North Dakota, temporary employees in our healthcare organizations, local businesses for workforce, and legal immigrants. It is logical that we make the effort to welcome them well so they want to stay here.”

The population of Bismarck-Mandan sees an annual increase of approximately 1,000 individuals, with the University of Mary revealing that two-thirds of their students hail from out-of-state.

Mandan Mayor Jim Froelich emphasized, “A strong community is built on kindness, connection, and a shared commitment to making everyone feel at home. Whether you lived here for generations or just arrived, you are a valued part of our community. Together, we can continue making Bismarck and Mandan a place where everyone belongs.”

Similarly, Bismarck Mayor Mike Schmitz stated, “We have pockets of wonderful things happening in our communities. Some people open their homes and hearts to new people coming into their workplaces and neighborhoods already. We want this effort to reach those who may not have considered how it feels to be new in our community and to take a step beyond just saying ‘hello’ and truly welcoming them.”

Additionally, the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC supports a website called Make Your Mark Bismarck-Mandan, which serves as a resource for clubs, non-profits, and interest groups to register and connect with newcomers and residents. The platform is accessible for registration at MakeYourMarkBisMan.com. The community is also encouraged to engage with the Facebook group "Bismarck Mandan Make Your Mark" to share stories and participate in local events.
