Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has addressed the recent move by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service to review and revise regulations related to the Endangered Species Act. The agencies aim to align these regulations more closely with the Act itself.
According to a notice in the Federal Register, the proposed changes seek to ensure that the regulations comply with the core intent of the Endangered Species Act. This review process is expected to foster regulatory consistency and clarity.
Commissioner Goehring expressed support for the proposed review, stating, “I applaud the commonsense decision to review and revise the Endangered Species Act regulations.” He further emphasized the potential benefits of implementing the new regulations: “If these new regulations are implemented, this will make the regulatory framework consistent with statute, prevent regulatory overreach, protect landowner rights and state sovereignty, allow agricultural producers to more efficiently use critical crop protection tools, and bolster energy and other development while maintaining protection of at-risk species.”
The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to balance ecological protection with economic and land use interests.
