The North Dakota Band Directors Association (NDBDA) has announced Melinda Halverson, a band teacher at Horizon Middle School in Bismarck, North Dakota, as the 2025 Band Director of the Year. The announcement was made via a Facebook post on March 6, 2025.

According to the NDBDA, Halverson has been teaching band for grades 6-8 at Horizon Middle School since 2016. She brings extensive teaching experience from both South Dakota and North Dakota. Recognized as an exemplary leader committed to music education, she is described as a forward-thinker who adapts her teaching methods to challenge students. Halverson was honored with the award during one of the All State Concerts at the North Dakota Music Educators Association (NDMEA), celebrating her significant contributions to music education.

The band program at Horizon Middle School focuses on musical training and personal growth for students. Participants engage in regular rehearsals and performances while developing skills such as teamwork, communication, and critical thinking. The program is led by specialized staff, including a percussion specialist and grade-level directors, offering structured instruction and encouraging long-term involvement in music.
