Morton County has implemented load restrictions on all county paved roadways, effective March 3, 2025. These restrictions are intended to protect road infrastructure during seasonal conditions that impact roadway stability.
Under the new restrictions, all paved county roads are limited to 6 tons per axle, with a maximum gross vehicle weight of 80,000 pounds. Exceptions apply to County Road 139, from State Highway 49 west to Interstate 94, and from ADM Elevator to Interstate 94, where different weight limits are in effect. These specific guidelines are outlined in the official notice issued by the county.
Gravel roads will also be restricted as needed. The county advises motorists to exercise caution on these roads, as they may become soft, rutted, or muddy during spring and extended wet periods. Officials will monitor conditions and adjust restrictions as necessary.
The restrictions are in accordance with county and state regulations that govern seasonal weight limits. Roadways experience increased wear due to moisture and temperature changes that weaken pavement and subgrade structures. The county enforces these limits to prevent excessive damage, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure safe travel for all motorists.
Law enforcement and road crews will oversee compliance. Violations may result in fines or penalties under county ordinances. Temporary permits may be issued for certain loads that require transport under specific conditions. Motorists and commercial drivers are encouraged to check regulations before planning routes.
The county has published load restriction maps and additional details on its website. Updates will be provided as conditions change.
For further details or inquiries, contact the Morton County Highway Department. The department will provide guidance on exemptions, alternate routes, and enforcement measures related to the restrictions.
These measures were ordered by the Morton County Commissioners with Dawn Rhone serving as the Morton County Auditor. More details and maps can be accessed at www.mortonnd.org/maps.
