Sitting Bull College has announced that Derek Gates has been named the Student of the Year for the 2024-2025 academic term. The award, supported by the Adolph Coors Foundation, acknowledges students who excel academically, engage with their community, and demonstrate a commitment to growth at each Tribal College/University.
Sitting Bull College President Phillips praised Gates for his accomplishments, stating: “I am writing to express my heartfelt congratulations on Derek’s remarkable achievements throughout his college journey. Derek’s hard work, dedication, and perseverance have truly paid off, and I am incredibly proud of all that he has accomplished. I love Derek’s testimony on how he persevered and didn’t give up."
Phillips highlighted Gates' resilience in facing challenges while balancing academics with extracurricular activities and personal commitments. She noted that his ability to thrive is inspiring.
As Gates prepares for future career steps, Phillips expressed confidence in his continued success: "The skills and knowledge he has acquired during his time at Sitting Bull College will serve him well as he embarks on new endeavors.
