On January 22, 2025, an individual was detained at the Williams County Correctional Center for driving with a suspended license and subsequently held on a detainer for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). On February 11, 2025, ICE informed the Williams County Sheriff’s Office that an agent would arrive that day to transfer the inmate for immigration processing. The inmate was released to someone believed to be an ICE agent.

Shortly after the release, it was discovered that the person was not an ICE agent. Law enforcement officers promptly initiated an investigation to locate both the inmate and the unauthorized individual. They were both apprehended without incident.

The inmate has been moved to the Ward County Detention Center, while the unauthorized individual faces charges of impersonating a law enforcement officer, classified as a misdemeanor.

The Sheriff's Office has implemented corrective measures to strengthen existing policies and procedures concerning security at the Correctional Center and preventing unauthorized access.
