U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer announced that Space Development Agency (SDA) Director Derek Tournear and General Michael Guetlein, Vice Chief of Space Operations for the U.S. Space Force, are scheduled to visit the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks Air Force Base, and Cavalier Space Force Station.
Senator Cramer highlighted the strategic importance of the facilities in North Dakota, stating, “The buildup of ground-based capabilities at Grand Forks Air Force Base and the warfighting support offered by Cavalier Space Force Station are critical to our national security and security around the world.” He emphasized the role of the University of North Dakota in preparing students for military careers and supporting military endeavors, describing it as “another competitive advantage” for the state in attracting defense projects.
Derek Tournear expressed appreciation for the cooperation from the Grand Forks community, noting, "The greater Grand Forks community has been extremely welcoming to Team SDA as we prepare for operations of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture and strengthen our relationships in the region.” He further mentioned that the SDA Operations Center-North, which will support operations of Tranche 1 satellites launching this summer, is completed and set to become fully operational.
President of the University of North Dakota expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “We are thrilled for this opportunity to strengthen our relationships with the U.S. Space Force and the Space Development Agency.” He acknowledged the university's mission to support these organizations by providing a skilled workforce and fostering research innovations. The university community expressed gratitude for Senator Cramer’s role in arranging the visit.
The planned itinerary includes a media availability session on Monday, April 21, at 4:15 p.m. CT in the Robin Hall Atrium at the University of North Dakota.
