Senator John Hoeven, Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee and a senior member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, announced that Mexico has rescinded its ban on genetically-engineered (GE) corn imports. This decision comes after significant pressure from U.S. officials to reverse the policy.
"This is great news, not only for U.S. farmers, but for the people of Mexico who will continue to have access to a high-quality, safe and affordable food staple," said Hoeven. "Mexico’s ban on the importation of GE corn flew in the face of years of scientific review and regulatory oversight, while creating yet another barrier for U.S. farmers trying to access the Mexican market. Rescinding this policy is the right call and will benefit both nations."
The reversal follows efforts by Hoeven and other senators who urged action from the U.S. Trade Representative and Agriculture Secretary against Mexico's stance. They argued that the ban compromised food security in Mexico and disregarded established safety regulations for GE corn, potentially hindering future agricultural advancements.
In response to these concerns, a USMCA dispute settlement panel recently determined that Mexico had breached its trade obligations under the agreement, ruling in favor of American farmers.
