Two candidates have been selected as finalists for the City Attorney position in Bismarck. Matthew Menge and Julie Mees are scheduled for interviews next week, competing for one of the city's three appointed roles alongside the Administrator and Assistant Administrator. The interviews will be conducted by a panel from the Bismarck City Commission on February 11 at 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM in the Tom Baker Room, located at the City/County Building.
Mayor Michael Schmitz emphasized the importance of this role, stating, “The City Attorney truly is one of the most critical positions within the City organization.” He highlighted that this position provides essential legal counsel and leads with integrity as part of serving Bismarck's citizens. Schmitz expressed appreciation for all applicants and anticipation for selecting a new leader.
Matthew Menge currently serves as an Assistant Attorney General for North Dakota, a role he has held since April 2023. His previous experience includes work as a court-appointed mediator with the North Dakota Law Mediation Program and various associate attorney positions. Menge holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Minnesota State University-Moorhead and graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Law.
Julie Mees has been part of Bismarck’s Legal Department since March 2021, initially as an Assistant City Attorney and more recently as Acting City Attorney following Jannelle Combs' resignation. Her career includes roles in Yellowstone County Attorney Office, Montana's State Public Defender Office, and U.S. Secret Service. Mees graduated from The College of William and Mary with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, along with degrees from The George Washington University and University of Montana School of Law.
