In January 2025, Bismarck will launch a pilot program to collect bulk residential items. The initiative, running through July, aims to evaluate its usage and determine if it should be implemented long-term.

The program stems from changes in garbage collection methods due to the unavailability of multipack trucks previously used by the city. Steve Salwei, Public Works Service Operations Director, informed the Bismarck City Commission that new garbage trucks do not accommodate extra items outside a resident's standard 96-gallon garbage can.

"The results of the survey we conducted in 2024 shared that bulky household items were primarily what constituted residents’ extras," said Public Works Service Operations Director Steve Salwei. "That survey also identified residents’ desire to keep the cost of collection down and that this type of program was a preferred option, going forward."

Residents who wish to have bulk items collected must contact Public Works for curbside pickup arrangements. A $20 service fee applies for up to five items per day, along with landfill disposal costs for each item. No collections will occur in April due to Spring Cleanup Week.

Deadlines for requesting bulk item pickup are set for January 27, February 24, March 17, May 19, June 16, and July 14 in 2025. Corresponding pickup dates are January 29, February 26, March 19, May 21, June 18, and July 16. Items must be placed on the curb by 6 AM on pickup days; weather conditions may affect schedules.

For property owners dealing with dumped items on their premises, contacting the Bismarck Police Department at 701-223-1212 is advised.

Further details about accepted items and additional information on the pilot program can be found online. To schedule a pickup date or inquire further, residents can reach out to Public Works Service Operations at 701-355-1700 and select Option 3 from the automated menu.
