The Mandan Fire Department has completed the installation of new exhaust systems at Fire Station 1 and Fire Station 2. The project was funded by an $80,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under its Assistance to Firefighters program.
Fire Chief Mitch Bitz commented on the improvements brought by the new system: “The new system makes for a much safer environment for the firefighters as it reduces the carcinogenic diesel exhaust emissions inside the bay when the fire apparatus is running inside the station.”
The Source Capture Exhaust Systems are designed to automatically activate when a fire truck starts and disconnect as it exits, ensuring a cleaner environment in the apparatus bay.
In addition to federal funding, a local match of $8,000 was required. This amount was approved by the City Commission in August through a budget amendment for 2024.
