Senator John Hoeven, along with local leaders and the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard, has announced a plan to establish a Veterans Memorial Center at the Fargo National Cemetery (FNC). This initiative follows Hoeven's work on the Senate Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Committee to expand FNC from 5 to 35 acres. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is investing in this expansion by developing a new master plan for infrastructure and ongoing operations.
Hoeven is coordinating efforts among veterans groups, local stakeholders, and the VA to ensure the facility meets veterans' needs. A working group has been formed including Senator Hoeven’s office, mayors of Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo, and the executive director of the FMWF Chamber. The group aims to officially name the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard as the nonprofit responsible for building the center.
To save time and cost, Hoeven proposed that a local nonprofit could develop and donate commemorative works like a visitor’s center to the National Cemetery Administration (NCA). He continues to advocate for VA support in Senate hearings with VA Secretary Denis McDonough.
The Honor Guard plans to use the Impact Foundation for financial oversight. They have prepared a proffer for VA review with input from Hoeven’s group. Efforts will continue to engage public support for this project.
“Since the time of its establishment, we have worked to bring enhanced facilities to the Fargo National Cemetery that properly honor our veterans and their families while supporting volunteers' efforts. Now, we have a solid community plan in place and the buy-in of essential stakeholders,” said Senator Hoeven. “With our working group's partnership with the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard and Impact Foundation, we are positioned to secure VA approval for this project.”
The $3.7 million Veterans Memorial Center will include amenities such as a gathering area for family members, a gallery showcasing veterans' lives, offices for VA staff, breakrooms for Honor Guard members, indoor restrooms, garage space for hearses, and parking facilities.
