Over the weekend, several large wildfires in western North Dakota caused significant damage to property and communities, resulting in one death and serious injuries to another individual. In response, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum declared a statewide fire emergency on October 3 to facilitate necessary response and recovery actions.

U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer expressed his concerns regarding the situation, stating, "Kris and I are praying for the families and communities affected by this devastating wildfire situation in western North Dakota." He also acknowledged the efforts of various emergency services: "I’m grateful for the quick action of the North Dakota National Guard and our firefighters, first responders, and emergency managers who are working to ensure the safety of North Dakotans, their homes, and their property."

Senator Cramer discussed with Brigadier General Mitch Johnson from the North Dakota National Guard about several Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) programs that could provide financial assistance for those affected by the fires. FEMA Region 8 is involved in helping with cost-sharing measures to alleviate some of the state's financial burdens.

On Sunday, FEMA authorized federal Fire Management Assistance Grants to help cover firefighting costs related to two major fires: Bear Den Fire and Elk Horn Fire. At that time, Bear Den Fire was threatening 100 primary structures and 500 other structures near Mandaree. The Elk Horn Fire posed a threat to 20 primary homes near Watford City along with other buildings, infrastructure, utilities, equipment, and oil infrastructure.

The NDNG along with state agencies like the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services and the North Dakota Forest Service have mobilized resources to maintain readiness levels for fire-related incidents. The State Emergency Operations Center is operating around-the-clock as local, state, tribal, and federal fire response efforts continue amidst this historic fire situation.

Safety information provided by the Office of the Governor advises residents to adhere to burn restrictions especially during Red Flag Warnings when conditions are ripe for increased fire danger due to warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. Residents are urged to exercise caution with outdoor equipment such as trailers or campers by ensuring tow chains do not drag on roadsides; avoid parking on tall dry grass; dispose of cigarettes properly; never leave recreational fires unattended; ensure they are fully extinguished after use.
