As concerns about non-citizens voting in federal elections increase, reports from Virginia and Texas indicate that thousands of non-citizens have been found on voter rolls. In response, U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer from North Dakota has joined forces with U.S. Senator Bill Hagerty of Tennessee to address these issues through a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The senators' letter calls for stricter enforcement of existing federal laws that prohibit non-citizens from registering or voting in federal elections. It also requests information from the Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding actions taken since January 2021, including statistics on prosecutions and referrals related to this issue.

"Given that the 2024 Presidential Election is in less than 36 days, your Department’s inaction and refusal to provide any information regarding its efforts to promote public trust and confidence in our elections is especially alarming," the senators wrote. They emphasized the potential threat posed by non-citizen participation to the integrity of elections and public trust.

Senator Cramer has consistently supported measures aimed at enhancing the integrity of both immigration systems and electoral processes during his tenure in the Senate. He was an original cosponsor of Senator Mike Lee's Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which mandates proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration in federal elections. Additionally, he cosponsored Hagerty's Equal Representation Act, designed to prevent counting non-citizens for congressional and Electoral College apportionment purposes.
