On August 2, 2024, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution condemning the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump during a political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13. The attack resulted in one fatality and left two others critically injured.
Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) joined Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) in introducing the bipartisan resolution. The measure aims to formally denounce the attempt on Trump's life, honor the victims, and call for national unity against violence.
“Political violence has no place in our society and it should be condemned whenever it surfaces,” said Senator Cramer. “The attempted assassination of President Trump was a vile and senseless act, leaving two critically injured and one dead. Our resolution is a testament to our hope and resilience, and an unyielding call for the nation to reject violence, stand together, and uphold our shared American values.”
Senator Barrasso emphasized the gravity of the incident: “On July 13, our nation witnessed a horrifying assassination attempt on President Trump. Our country was inches away from a catastrophic event that would have changed the course of our history.” He added that the Senate's unanimous condemnation underscores their collective stance against such acts.
“We also honor the life of a brave American, Corey Comperatore, who did not hesitate to give his life protecting his family. We honor David Dutch and James Copenhaver, who were both critically injured. Americans deserve to attend political events and exercise their rights without fear for their lives. Congress is determined to find answers and ensure this never happens again,” continued Senator Barrasso.
