Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed a joint meeting of Congress today, emphasizing the United States' solidarity with Israel. U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) responded to Netanyahu’s address, providing his perspective on the speech.

“Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, addressed us in a joint session of Congress today commemorating the Jewish State of Israel’s 76 years of independence. After the worst attack on Jews since the Holocaust and amidst an abhorrent rise in antisemitism, right here in the United States as well as around the world, his address was really a vision of hope and one of resilience. It was also a stark reminder of the ongoing vigilance democracies must always maintain. We can never take our freedom for granted."

Senator Cramer continued by highlighting what he perceives as a lack of American leadership: “The Prime Minister’s address was a welcome reminder of the need for American leadership in a dangerous world, and we’re lacking that right now quite honestly. Our support for Israel should not be up for debate, and the way we spend our time and energy in the Senate should be reflective of this priority, and the words of our leadership should reflect this priority. At a time when we could be taking up the National Defense Authorization Act, which passed the committee to ensure our military is equipped to defend our country and lead on the global stage, Leader Schumer is forcing messaging bills and political nominees. The Prime Minister’s address was a reminder that America has to lead. Our collective defense can’t be put on the backburner."

Cramer also expressed disappointment over some members' absence from Netanyahu's address: “Over two dozen Democrats from Congress were not in attendance today. It’s shameful, it’s disappointing, and it sends a bad message to the despots and to the allies of the United States around the world. We need to lead from strength, we need to lead with unity, and Israel should not be up for debate. God bless Israel, God bless the United States of America, and God bless you.”
